My secret weapon for laser-focused productivity

You ever sit down to work on something and then next thing you know hours have passed and you never actually did the thing you set out to do?

I did that with my taxes today…

Sat down at my computer to get started on last year’s tax return and the next thing I know two hours have passed and I’ve fallen down some rabbit hole of reading news articles and haven’t even started my taxes.

All because I forgot to use the trick I always use to keep focused whenever I’m working on something that I need to get done right away, without any distractions.

Whenever I’m working on creating a new subliminal session, or writing an article for my website, or recording a custom subliminal session for a customer…

I always set a 30 minute timer.

I learned about this trick years ago and it changed the way I work forever… except for the rare occasion when I just completely forget to do it.

It’s so simple, but the psychology behind it is very powerful.

Usually, when we sit down in front of a big task, it looks so daunting that we subconsciously avoid the discomfort of tackling the task by allowing our minds to wander to anything else.

Getting distracted is easy because we’re already prone to wanting to avoid the task anyway.

But setting a timer for a bite-sized chunk of time removes all that pressure and discomfort.

Now, instead of sitting down to focus on a monumental task, you’re just sitting down to work for 30 minutes.

And…

You don’t even need to work on the task at hand, at first.

That’s the beauty of it…

You just have to tell yourself, “Okay, until this timer goes off all I can do is sit here. I can still let my mind wander but I can’t get up, I can’t check my email or social media, I can’t browse the internet, I can’t look at my phone. I just have to sit here until the timer goes off and work on the task, or not work on it, but I can’t do anything else.”

But you’ll never sit there for too long, because something interesting happens after a few minutes…

You get bored.

And boredom is uncomfortable.

So then your mind gives in and starts working on the task at hand because just sitting there doing nothing else is boring.

AND… knowing that you only have to stick to it for another 25 minutes or so removes all of the pressure of wondering how long all of this is going to take.

Then, the next thing you know, the timer is going off and you’ve taken a huge chunk out of your task.

WAY more than you would have if you hadn’t set the timer, and in a much shorter period of time.

So then you take a 5-10 minute break to do whatever you want, and come back and set the timer again.

Again, it’s very simple.

One of those things that’s so simple it’s tempting to blow it off as something that couldn’t possibly be that effective.

But if you try it and experience the results for yourself you might be amazed at just how much faster you get things done, and how much more free time you have to do the things you really want to be doing.
